It was during a scrimmage last year when then-Arundel junior Jack Gordon's football season ended before it could truly begin thanks to a freak foot injury.

"I was doing a running play right up the middle, and no one even touched me. But I made a move, and the top of the bone on my right foot just split in half. It just separated," Gordon said of a broken foot that sidelined him for most of the year. "It was tough. It was devastating. But I know that everything happens for a reason. So I kept the faith, knowing that if I continued to work hard, things would work out and I would get my chance. Patience is a virtue, and I just had to wait it out."

Gordan's patience continued to pay off for the fourth-ranked Wildcats with Friday night's 49-6 victory at Anne Arundel County League rival South River.

A 6-foot senior, Gordon threw for 87 of his 131 yards passing and scores of 6 and 27 yards to Devin Hawkins and Dillon Tighe, respectively, in the first half. The Wildcats (4-0) led at halftime, 35-6.

"It took a lot of rehabilitation," Gordon said. "I was just working out whenever I could, getting better and just waiting for my opportunity."

Running back Matt Davis ran for scores of 2 and 12 yards, the second of which made it 42-6 and began the running clock with 9:42 remaining in the third quarter. Tyler Young was good on all seven of his extra point kicks and returned a punt 43 yards for a touchdown. Blake Thornton returned a kickoff 95 yards for another score, and reserve quarterback Cooper Hibbs ran for the visitors' final touchdown from 5 yards out with a minute left to play.

Down 7-0 after Gordon connected with Hawkins, the 15th-ranked Seahawks (2-2) were within a point at 6:07 of the first quarter after Connor Cox found Eric Young for a 49-yard scoring catch. But the Wildcats led, 14-6, after Thornton's ensuing kickoff return sparked the decisive 42-0 run, including a 21-point second quarter.
