Broadneck, which was without senior captain Collin Harrell, who did not qualify for the tournament after an incident at the Anne Arundel championships last week, goes into Saturday in fourth place with 26 points.
Cameron Harrell, the No. 1 seed at 120 pounds and Collin's younger brother, needed just 1 minute and 23 seconds to pin his opponent in the quarterfinals. He said he and his teammates are dedicating their regional and state performances to Collin — who was ejected from the last week's tournament at North County when he questioned an administrator about why his mother was being escorted from the building.
"What's happened to Collin hasn't impacted me in a negative way," Cameron said. "I'm using it as motivation. Our whole team is. It's a good reason to work harder. This is for him."
The freshman said he "expects" to win the region title, "but I can't get my hopes too high. I've got to take the matches one-by-one before I go jumping ahead."
Collin Harrell was at Wilde Lake on Friday supporting his teammates by helping them warm up for their matches and cheering them on.
"Even though I'm not wrestling, I'm still here with them, helping to warm them up with drills and trying to keep them confident," he said.
Arundel's Tyler Goodwin was enjoying his time on the mat. A state champion at 130 pounds last year, he pinned his 132-pound quarterfinal opponent in 28 seconds to advance to Saturday's semifinals, which begin at 10 a.m.
"People ask me how I can set a higher goal after going undefeated [last year] and winning states," said Goodwin, who has lost just once in 33 matches this season."I want to win another title, I want as many of my teammates as possible to advance to states, and I want my teammate Logan Reece to win state's too. He has been working really hard."
