With All-Metro second-team senior forward Kayel Locke in and out of the game with foul trouble, the No. 12 Eagles got key points from junior guard B.J. Andrews, pivotal stops on defense in the final minutes and poised work at the foul line from junior guard Taysean Scott in the closing seconds to earn a 46-44 win over the No. 14 Cardinals.
After missing two free throws with 5:12 to play, Scott calmly sank two with 13 seconds left to provide the difference. The Cardinals had a chance to tie when freshman guard Drew Edwards drove to the basket, but his shot with two seconds left rimmed out. The Eagles kept the home team from scoring in the final 3:17 to turn a three-point deficit into a win.
Despite the foul trouble, Locke led all scorers with 16 points, while Andrews finished with 15 — including a 3-pointer early in the fourth quarter and a driving layup that tied the game at 44 with 1:18 to play. Solid defense set the tone in the closing minutes, and Scott provided the necessary points at the foul line.
"I missed a couple early and they were in my mind, but I got myself together and took my time. My teammate [Andrews] told me to take all 10 seconds. I did and knocked them down," said Scott, who finished with nine points.
McDonogh improves to 2-1 overall and 1-1 in the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference. Calvert Hall, which got 15 points from senior forward Justin Beck, is 1-2 overall and 0-2 in league play.
The game was filled with small runs from both teams with neither able to pull away. When Calvert Hall senior forward Denzel Richardson (13 points) took a nifty interior pass from Beck for a basket inside, the Cardinals had the game's biggest lead at 31-24 with 4:08 to play in the third quarter. But two 3-pointers from Andrews would help the Eagles stay close in the third quarter, and their defense took over in the fourth.
"B.J. Andrews stepped up and made some big shots for us as well as getting a lot of stops," McDonogh coach Donta Evans said. "I thought our defense was the difference in the game."
