Franklin's Nyjari McNeil, Dulaney's Eric Walz are double winners at state indoor meet

For The Baltimore Sun
Franklin's Nyjari McNeil and Dulaney's Eric Walz both won a pair of events at the state indoor track meet.

Several metro-area teams did well Tuesday in the Class 4A and Class 3A Indoor State Championships at the Prince George's Sports and Learning Center, but none earned a state title.

Oxon Hill won the boys 3A championship, while Northern (Calvert) won the girls 3A title. In Class 4A, Northwest (boys) and Flowers (girls) took home the top team prizes.

Individually, Baltimore County did have two double winners in the meet — one on the girls side and one for the boys.

Franklin's Nyjari McNeil won the 3A title in both the 500-meter run and the 800. McNeil was the defending state champion in the 500, but won the 800 after finishing second last year.

The sophomore continued her success from her freshman year, winning the 500 with a time of 1 minute, 14.89 seconds. She beat Sydney Robinson of River Hill by nearly three seconds.

"I cut a full second off my time from last year, so I'm really pleased about that," McNeil said. "I started out slower than I wanted, but I was able to make it up in the final 200 meters. I think the competition was a little better than last year."

Later in the night, McNeil defeated C.Milton Wright's Jessica Rogers by seven seconds to win the 800.

On the boys side, Dulaney's Eric Walz captured state titles in both the 1,600 and 3,200. Walz was the defending champion in the 3,200, but he said he surprised himself in the1,600.

"I set a goal, and I was confident I could do it," said Walz. "When I ran [the 1,600], I think I closed faster than I ever have in my life. It feels great to win at both distances."

Poly's Deja Stevenson saved her best for last, winning the 55-meter hurdles in her senior year for her first state title. Stevenson won in 8.42 seconds, just edging Helen Sarah Penda of Seneca Valley (8.48). The victory was sweet for Stevenson, but she was a little disappointed in her time.

"Of course I'm glad I won, but I could have done better," she said. "I think I clipped the last hurdle, and that slowed me down a little. I wasn't worried about anyone else out there except me, and I think that worked to my advantage."

Poly picked up a winner on the boys side, too, when William Henderson won the state title in the 55-meter dash with a time of 6.40.

Digital Harbor's boys also won a state title, running a 3:27.54 in the 4x400 relay.

Franklin had another winner in the field events, when Amanda Murphy won the state title with a throw of 40 feet, 6 inches.

Howard County had a couple of winners. The Howard boys 4x800 relay team won the state title by nipping Winston Churchill. The Lions ran a time of 8:17.84, beating Churchill by just under half a second.

For the girls, Wilde Lake's Deanna Yancey out-jumped Julia Shanley of Mount Hebron to win the 3A high jump. The Wildecats got another winner when Jamila Brown won the 300 dash in 39.92.

Local girls won both pole vault competitions, as Severna Park's Fionna Schoener won the 4A title, and Sophie Caplan of River Hill won the 3A title.
