With hard-working, talented players but no superstar, Peace-Able's team was truly greater than the sum of its parts. The No. 3 Engineers used that team approach to go undefeated until the state semifinal and post the best record in school history (23-1).

She preached defense, and Poly allowed just 27.95 points per game — fewer than any other team in the state tournament. They weren't fancy, but they excelled at the basics, winning the Baltimore City Division I championship and the Class 4A North regional title before falling to eventual state champion Gaithersburg, 47-30.

"The players made it work because they listened," Peace-Able said. "Sometimes you get a system in your mind and you want to run that system, but we found a system that worked for the kids we had. We win as a team. There's not that go-to person who's putting up 30 points. My leading scorer averages 11 points a game."

A former Engineers player, Peace-Able has a 173-53 career record in 10 years as a coach. She also took Poly to the state final in 2008 and the semifinals in 2007.
