Baltimore City girls basketball got the better of its Baltimore County counterparts at Thursday's opening day of the 16th Annual Basketball Academy as No. 6 Poly and No. 7 Dunbar scored easy victories.
Poly (14-0) used balanced scoring to roll over Randallstown, 69-9, and Dunbar (11-4) got 33 points from All-Metro forward Michelle Wright to match Woodlawn's total in the Poets' 76-33 victory at Lake Clifton, the home for all three days of this year's event.
The Engineers scored the first 23 points of their game and put 12 players in the box score, including three in double figures — Keli Alston with 12 points and Blair Harding and Chaun Crockett with 10 each. No one scored more than three points for the Rams, but senior center Tiffany Davis had 13 rebounds and seven blocks.
In the second game, Dunbar got a 23-2 jump on the Warriors as Wright had four steals and scored 16 points in the first quarter. The senior finished with 11 rebounds and two blocks.
The Warriors struggled against the Poets' pressure, as Dunbar had 14 steals in the first half — six by Wright and three each by Shylia Buie and Sierra Johnson.
"We were coming off two big losses to Poly and [No. 2] Digital Harbor," said Buie, a senior guard who scored 14 points, "so this was kind of like a breakout game for us, because we want to get back on the road to winning and get to a [state] championship."
The competition gets a lot tougher for the defending state Class 1A champion Poets when they return to the Basketball Academy on Saturday to play No. 1 and undefeated Aberdeen at 1 p.m. The Engineers will meet Woodlawn on Saturday at 5 p.m., while Randallstown plays No. 2 Digital Harbor at 11 a.m.
The marquee girls game of the Academy — a showdown between Aberdeen and No. 2 Digital Harbor — tips off Friday at 4 p.m.
