Girls Athlete of the Week: Ali Flax, Garrison Forest, field hockey
The senior captain came to the Grizzlies' rescue on two occasions this season, the last coming in Sunday's 3-0 win over McDonogh in the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference championship game at Goucher College. After assisting on the game's first goal in the first half playing her usual midfield position, Flax took over as goalie in the second half when starter Kendall Kuntz had to leave the game with an injury. Flax, a two-year varsity starter, protected the 1-0 halftime lead with three saves as the Grizzlies (18-1-2) pulled away for their fourth championship in six years. The move to goalie was nothing new for Flax, who played in the cage for the first time ever at the start of the season when Kuntz was out with a broken foot. In 14 games this season, Flax finished with 82 saves and allowed just 11 goals, posting six shutouts. Flax, who also plays guard on Garrison Forest's basketball team, is undecided on a college and whether she will continue playing sports at the next level.
