Girls Athlete of the Week: Ellie Gonzalez, Catholic, cross country

In capturing her first Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland cross country championship last Wednesday, the sophomore dominated the field as well as the Oregon Ridge Park course with a record-breaking performance. Gonzalez, who earned second-team All-Metro honors last season, covered the 3.1-mile course in 17 minutes, 59 seconds to finish 1:30 in front of runner-up Holly Cook of John Carroll and break the six-year-old meet record by 31 seconds. Gonzalez, who competes In the C Conference for the Cubs, finished second in last year's championship to McDonogh's Madeline Dulac. As a freshman, Gonzalez also earned first-team All-Metro honors in outdoor track after capturing the 1,600- and 3,200-meter races in the IAAM championships, and she was a second-team selection in indoor track with a conference title in the 800.
