The Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference changed its schedule format — playing just nine league games this season — thus allowing room for interesting games like this one. Adding to the excitement is that it's the season opener for both teams. Gilman is the defending MIAA A champion while the host Bulls, the area's best among the public schools, won their fourth straight Class 3A-2A state crown last spring. The team that better handles the opening-game jitters could claim an early lead and go from there. The Greyhounds have quality starting players all over the field. Haus is one of the area's finest defensemen, Matthai anchors a deep midfield and Koerber is their catalyst on attack. It comes down to execution, but gaining possession comes first and the Bulls have a sturdy faceoff player in Demiris, who won
71 percent of the draws he took last season. Getting the ball and being patient with it would serve the Bulls well against a deeper Gilman team. The game is looked at as a win-win for both teams — quality early-season competition allowing each to prepare for the bigger games down the road.
