Dunbar boys, Poly girls win Baltimore City track and field titles

For The Baltimore Sun

The host Dunbar boys and Poly girls used a similar formula to lock up team titles on the final day of competition at the Baltimore City track and field championships Saturday.

Neither team won many events – Dunbar had one victory total in the meet while Poly came up with only two – but both groups piled up the points with plenty of top-three finishes.

The Dunbar boys edged Digital Harbor, 123-116. Poly was right behind with 112 points. The only event Dunbar won was the 110-meter hurdles, which Almighty Wiliamson took in a time of 15.31 seconds.

However, the Poets also racked up five second-place finishes and four thirds. That helped them come up with enough points to outlast the Rams.

Wiliamson also took second in the 300 hurdles Saturday after taking second in the long jump on a weather-shortened first day Thursday. Markese Homes took second in the 400, and Dunbar’s 1,600 relay ream also finished in second place.

Ablel Gebreselase helped keep Digital Harbor close as he won the 1,600 in 4:42.06 and was second in the 800. He also won the 3,200 on Thursday. Jordan Carrington gave Digital Harbor its other Saturday victory, taking the 800 in 2:02.38, just beating out Gebreselase (2:03.15).

Dalon Harris of Forest Park was the only two-event winner Saturday. He captured the 100 (10.89) and the 200 (21.64).

For the girls, Poly outlasted Mervo, 172-161. The Engineers won only two of the 17 events, but like the Poets, they came up with plenty of other points.

Poly had four second-place finishes – which included a tie for second between two Engineers — and seven thirds. That helped them hold off a Mervo team that won seven events.

Cathryn Lane (100, 12.36) and Taniya Crowner (long jump, 16-7.5) were the Poly winners. Crowner also finished third in the 100 hurdles.

For Mervo, Kaelyn Woodrum led the way with her victories in the 300 hurdles (45.90) and the triple jump (32-9.5). Brielle Reynolds took first in the 200 (25.36) while Jada Williams won the shot put (31-10.5).

The Mustangs cleaned up in the relays, capturing the 400 in 51.15 and the 1,600 in 4:05.79.

On Thursday, Mervo also won the 800 relay (1:49.45).

Kaelyn Carter of City was the only multiple-event winner in the meet. She took first in the both the 400 (58.28) plus the 800 (2:28.18).
