Anyone who saw Tuesday night's Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference semifinal between Boys' Latin and Gilman is likely to be talking about it for years to come.
The second-ranked Greyhounds scored three man-down goals in the final 1 minute, 2 seconds of regulation to tie the game, 1and then the winner 3:08 into overtime to defeat the fourth-ranked Lakers, 7-6, at Towson University's Johnny Unitas Stadium.
Senior Ryan Tucker had three of Gilman's final four goals, including the game-winner in the extra period.
The Greyhounds (12-5) will face Calvert Hall, an 11-4 winner over St. Paul's in the other semifinal, in the championship game at 8 p.m. Friday at Unitas Stadium.
The Lakers (11-8) took control of the game early in the fourth quarter, using goals by Ben Pridemore, and two by Shack Stanwick to take a 6-3 lead with 4:30 left. Then the Greyhounds went to work.
After a Gilman penalty, Tucker created space and fired a bullet past Adam Davey to cut the margin to 6-4 with 1:02 left. Gilman added another goal off the ensuing faceoff, when Conor Doyle found the back of the net to pull to 6-5 with 42 seconds left.
Tucker added another goal to tie the game with 27 seconds left, when he beat Davey low to his stick side.
The Greyhounds completed the comeback when Tucker scored from 12 yards out on a low dart with 3:08 left in overtime.
"That was our "14" play," said Tucker. "[Gilman coach Brooks Matthews] called it in the huddle. We moved the ball around, and then kicked it back up to me. That cleared out the middle and I just took it and buried it."
Said Matthews: "I've never seen anything like that. I'm just glad we came out on the right end of that one. Credit BL, because they had a great defensive game plan coming in. It took us a while to get going."
Gilman goalie Palmer Murray — who recorded seven saves — put the victory in persopective.
"We had some guys on the team who'd been at Gilman for 12 years," he said. "We're a senior team, and I think we realized that we didn't want it to end like this. We had to keep it going."
