Pete Hughes earned his second state title in 32 years of coaching when Long Reach edged Centennial by six points for the Class 3A championship.
He also guided the Hammond girls to a title in 1993, but Hughes really took pride in how hard the Lightning worked this winter. This was the team's first state title in indoor track.
Long Reach really came on late, winning the Howard County and region titles before getting past Centennial for the state crown.
"The key this year was senior leadership," Hughes said. "Guys like Rob Carter and Tosin Oyewole … they worked hard at every practice."
Hughes specializes in hurdles and jumps and credits coach Sam Sesay with working with the team's sprinters.Copyright © 2015, The Baltimore Sun
