St. Maria Goretti's Martin Geben named BCL Player of the Year

The St. Maria Goretti boys basketball team won three of the top awards at the Baltimore Catholic League's awards banquet Monday night at Snyder's Willow Grove Restaurant in Linthicum.

The league's coaches selected the Gaels' Martin Geben, a 6-foot-7 junior forward at the Hagerstown school, as the Jerry Savage Player of the Year, while St. Maria Goretti coach Amrit Rayfield earned the O. Ray Mullis Coach of the Year award. St. Maria Goretti senior guard Tyrus Fleetwood was chosen as the Cokey Robertson Most Improved Player.

Mount St. Joseph junior guard Phil Booth was named the Mark Amatucci Defensive Player of the Year.

Geben, a native of Lithuania who came to St. Maria Goretti in his sophomore year, averaged 17 points and 12 rebounds.

"It's a great honor — one I didn't expect," Geben said. "... I don't play the game as much for awards, but doing whatever it takes to help my team win. Basketball means a lot to me. That's why I'm here."

The Gaels (21-11, 7-7 in the BCL), the fifth seed in the upcoming BCL playoffs, will play on the road against No. 7 Archbishop Spalding in the quarterfinals on Friday.

The BCL tournament opens with the quarterfinal round on Friday, followed by Sunday's semifinals and Monday's championship game, with the final two rounds at Loyola University.
