Of all the traits Mount St. Joseph senior guard Phil Booth has brought to the basketball court in his fourth varsity season, his consistency on offense and defense may stand out the most.
He scores from everywhere, is a gifted passer and grabs big rebounds. He plays defense with the same skills, smarts and determination.
Averaging 18 points, six rebounds and three assists a game, the Villanova-bound Booth was named the Baltimore Catholic League's Jerry Savage Player of the Year Monday night at Snyder's Willow Grove Restaurant in Linthicum.
"There's a lot of great players that have come through the BCL, some big-time names, so it's a big accomplishment for me winning this award," said Booth, who scored 25 points to lead Mount St. Joseph to a 68-58 win over St. Frances for the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference championship on Sunday. "It tops off a great season we've been having and hopefully we can finish well this weekend."
The No. 2 Gaels take a 29-4 mark into the BCL quarterfinals, to play St. Maria Goretti at 3:30 p.m. Friday to open the four-game slate at UMBC. The tournament continues on Sunday with the semifinal games at 1 and 3 p.m. with the championship game at 7 p.m. Monday.
Also honored on Monday was Calvert Hall's John Bauersfeld, who was chosen as the O. Ray Mullis Coach of the Year.
Calvert Hall junior forward Evan Phoenix was named the Cokey Robertson Most Improved Player and, his teammate, junior forward Nico Clareth was recognized as the Mark Amatucci Defensive Player of the Year.
