2017 Baseball Players To Watch

For The Baltimore Sun
Check out the players to watch this high school baseball season.

Jeremy Arocho

Old Mill, senior, shortstop

The leadoff hitter batted .435 with a .529 on-base percentage, .739 slugging percentage, six doubles, three triples, three home runs, 17 RBIs and 15 stolen bases to earn first-team All-Metro honors. A four year starter, Arocho will continue his career at Maryland.

Kieran Garner

River Hill, senior, pitcher

The Maryland-bound right-hander was the top pitcher in Howard County last season. He finished 5-2, using a fastball topping out in the low-90s to strike out 91 in 551/3 innings. The preseason all-state selection walked just 20 batters.

Jake Getzendanner

Catonsville, senior, second baseman

A three-year varsity starter at second base, Getzendanner earned second-team All-Metro honors last season after batting .456 with a .581 on-base percentage. He struck out just twice in 74 plate appearances.

Austin Koehn

Patterson Mill, junior, pitcher

As a sophomore, Koehn finished 10-1 with a 1.42 ERA, leading the Huskies to the Class 1A state championship game. While not overpowering, the first-team All-Metro pick and preseason all-state selection can throw three pitches for strikes, mixing up speeds to keep hitters off balance.

Mark Lopez

Boys' Latin, senior, shortstop-pitcher

The four-year starter led the Lakers to the MIAA B Conference title last season, batting .440 with a .587 on-base percentage and a .619 slugging percentage. The Johns Hopkins commit also had 32 RBIs, scored 42 runs and stole 17 bases to earn second-team All-Metro honors.

Kody Milton

Severna Park, junior, third baseman

The powerful infielder led the Falcons with five home runs and 21 RBIs last spring, batting .320 with a 1.147 on-base-plus-slugging. He has committed orally to Maryland and was a preseason all-state pick.

Stephen Pelli

St. Mary's, junior, pitcher

The hard-throwing right-hander had a 1.78 ERA as a sophomore, striking out 70 in 43 innings and winning five of eight decisions. He is a preseason all-state pick and has committed to Virginia Tech.

Jack Schroeder

Mount Hebron, senior, pitcher-outfielder

The Virginia Commonwealth commit and preseason all-state pick batted .387 with 21 RBIs last season. On the mound, he had a 0.98 ERA with 52 strikeouts in 43 innings, earning second-team All-Metro honors.

Joe Seidler

Chesapeake-AA, junior, pitcher-first baseman

The right-hander went 11-1 with a 0.68 ERA last season, allowing just 43 hits in 712/3 innings while holding hitters to a .179 average. He also batted .395 with two homers and 19 RBIs, earning first-team All-Metro honors and leading the Cougars to the Class 3A state championship game. He is a preseason all-state selection.

Nick Vermillion

Archbishop Spalding, senior, third baseman-pitcher

The preseason all-state pick batted .364 with 25 RBIs and a 1.109 OPS in helping the Cavaliers claim their third straight MIAA A Conference championship. Vermillion, who will play football at Towson, also had a 1.75 ERA.
