The Poly girls and No. 7 Digital Harbor boys cruised to team titles at the Baltimore City track and field championships Saturday at Mervo.

This was the first-ever team title for Poly's girls. Coach Latoya Brown's team finished with 121 points, beating out long-time Baltimore City powerhouse Western (104).

"I tried to put people in places where I know they could score points," Brown said. "I told them to believe in themselves and go out and do it."

Poly dominated the field events, taking the top three spots in both the high jump and triple jump plus first and third in the long jump — which gave the Engineers 64 points.

Tabitha Pyatt (high jump), Deja Stevenson (triple jump) and Lechi Nwanequo (long jump) each won field events. Naqiyah Abdallah added a win in the 300 hurdles and also took third in the triple jump. Pyatt finished second in the triple jump while Stevenson was third in the long jump.

Digital Harbor, the Class 3A state champions indoors, had an even easier time. The Rams (177) beat Poly (90) and the rest of the field.

The final margin would have been bigger if top runners George Flaviano and Quick Stukes weren't out nursing minor injuries. They'll be back for this week's region meets, but the Rams didn't need them here.

Digital Harbor's Michael Francis won the long and triple jumps. Corey Mendez (high jump), Jacob Forrest-Jones (discus) and Travis Walker (800) also won individual events. The Rams won the 800 and 3,200-meter relays.

"Everyone had to step up and suck up all the injuries we had [this season]," Walker said. "Everyone showed up at this meet."

City freshman Robert Miller continued his strong year by winning the 100, 200 and 110 hurdles. Eyoseyas Afework of Northwestern 400) did the same.
