South River girls, Arundel boys win Anne Arundel track and field titles

Track and Field

The South River girls made school history on Wednesday at the Anne Arundel County championship meet.

Carly Bunting and Reilly Wagner each won two individual events as the Seahawks captured their first-ever county crown, edging out No. 8 Severna Park, 120-111, in the championship meet at Northeast.

On the boys' side, Arundel used a late victory in the discus to beat South River, 116-114.

The South River girls secured the county title after they picked up a key victory in the 1,600-meter relay, the night's final event, and finished with wins in seven of the night's 18 events.

"I'm just speechless; I'm so proud of the team," Seahawks coach Hugh Harris said. "It's one of the goals we focused on, winning the county. All the pieces just fell into place."

Bunting won the 1,600-meter and 3,200-meter dashes while Wagner took the high jump and 300-meter hurdles.

South River's Kali Dawson earned the most unusual victory. She won the 100-meter hurdles, but her time of 15.66 seconds came in a heat in which she was the only participant. Dawson missed the running of the race due to a miscommunication, but Harris protested and meet officials let her run alone.

Dawson and Wagner also ran on the anchor leg of the winning 1,600 relay team. Kelsie McGlynn (200-meter dash) was the other South River winner.

Arundel had a tougher time in the boys meet. The Wildcats finished with three victories and the last proved most important as Isaiah Olugbemi won the discus in the final event. Those 10 points let Arundel win their second county title in three years.

"This kid has the hardest head in the discus," Wildcats coach Ira Queen said with a laugh. "But he won it for us. I knew it was going to come down to the end."

Arundel's only other individual victory came when D.J. Brookins won the 100-meter dash. The Wildcats also captured the 400-meter relay and ended up with seven top-3 finishes.

One of the meet's better races took place when Brent Musselman of South River beat Ryan Forsyth of Severna Park in the 1,600-meter dash. It was Musselman's first win over Forsyth this year, including the cross country and indoor track seasons.

Musselman hung close to the leaders before making his move midway through the final lap. He took the lead with about 200 meters to go and pulled away down the stretch to win in a meet-record time of 4:15.64. Forsyth took second in 4:18.06.

"I tried to make a move on the third lap, but it didn't work," Musselman said. "With 300 meters to go, I knew I had to make my move."

Amanda Lusk of Chesapeake won the shot put and discus. Kaylah Mitchell from Old Mill won twice the triple and long jumps. Anthony Hicks of Old Mill took the same two events for the boys team. Meade's David Richards (110-meter hurdles, 300-meter hurdles) was the other boy to win two events.
