The Mount Mat Madness Tournament, which returned to UMBC on Friday after a one-year absence, could have a Baltimore-area team champion for the first time since McDonogh won back-to-back titles in 2007 and 2008.
Archbishop Spalding and Glenelg High sit tied atop the standings with 52 points after the first day of a tournament that features teams from four state. Wyoming Seminary, of Pennsylvania, captured the championship from 2009-2011.
Archbishop Spalding advanced eight wrestlers, tying Reservoir for the most, into Saturday's quarterfinals of the 26-team, two-day tournament.
Spalding advanced Wolfie Bradley (120), Mike Pearson (126), Matt Pente (132), Cole Graves (145), Logan Breitenbach (152), Jimmy Malone (160), Jacob Parker (182) and Zach Abey (220).
"We have three or four kids with a legitimate shot at a championship," said Spalding coach Mike Laidley, whose program last competed in the tournament in 2006.
Top-seeded Breitenbach (14-0) might represent the Cavaliers' best chance for an individual title.
The junior has already won the Ray Oliver Invitational and the Beast of the East Tournament in Delaware.
Glenelg sent six wrestlers onto the quarterfinals, including Tim Null (106), Sean Twigg (285), Joe Zoller (152), Austin Pagnotta (145), Ryan Carter (138) and Zach Shackelford (132).
Twigg, a defending Class 2A/1A state champion with a 13-1 record, highlights Glenelg's lineup.
Glenelg coach Chris Rosas said wrestling the elite group of Mount Mat Madness participants will pay off for his Gladiators.
"There are guys from private schools and (Class) 4A/3A that some our guys won't see in the state tournament," Rosas said. "That's why we come here."
The competition proved to be stellar as the tournament returned after taking a year off. Tournament director Neil Adelberg decided to take a season off because the workload to get ready is a pain-staking ordeal.
"It's a year-long project to prepare," Adelberg said. "That's different than most tournaments."
