Boys' Latin soccer coach Don Rickels remembered Thursday what he told his team on the first day of practice.
"We said in order to go to the championship, you've got to go through St. Paul's," Rickels said. "You've got to beat the best to be the best."
On Thursday, the fourth-seeded Lakers did, defeating the top-seeded Crusaders, the two-time defending champions, 2-1, in the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association B Conference semifinals.
Boys' Latin (13-5-1, 12-4-1 conference) got a pair of second-half goals from Maxx Lowenstein. The first came off a 70-yard free kick from Aaron Leeds, the second off a rebound from 25 yards out.
Illyas Mirza's late penalty kick was the only score for the host Crusaders (16-7, 15-2).
Boys' Latin will face Severn in the championship game.
Severn 3, Friends 1: The season was moving along quite nicely for Friends (12-3-1) until Severn (15-3-3) ruined it in a MIAA B Conference semifinal Thursday.
The third-seeded Admirals handed second-seeded Friends a 3-1 loss to end the Quakers' season.

The MIAA announced a time change in Saturday's A Conference semifinal opener.
