Top-ranked Arundel kept falling behind No.6 Severna Park on Wednesday in the first Anne Arundel County girls volleyball championship. But the host Wildcats (15-0) managed to come back in every set except one to win, 3-1.
Last year, Arundel beat Howard County's River Hill in the District V championship.
The Falcons (12-3) led 19-17 in the first set before Arundel scored six straight points. The Wildcats came back after being down 17-7 in the third set and went on a 14-1 run to close out the fourth. Arundel won, 25-23, 19-25, 28-26, 25-22.
Allie Orr had 15 kills, 11 digs and three aces, Ashlee Felton had eight kills and Lily Glenn added 14 digs for the Wildcats, who have a bye in Friday's opening round and await the winner of Leonardtown's match with Meade in Monday's Class 4A East quarterfinal.
No. 4 Marriotts Ridge 2, Glenelg 1: Rabih Najib scored twice to power the host Mustangs (15-0) past the Gladiators in a Class 2A North quarterfinal. Marriotts Ridge led 2-0 at the half.
No. 6 Centennial 6, Howard 0: Jackson Bicknell made two saves in his eighth shutout and Josh Poole and Heston Priestley scored two goals each for the host Eagles (12-1-1) in a Class 3A East regional quarterfinal. Centennial will host Reservoir, which beat Mount Hebron on penalty kicks, in Saturday's regional semifinal at 3 p.m.
No. 11 Perry Hall 1, Sherwood 0: Rob Allman beat two defenders down the left side and crossed the ball to the left side, where Matt Holtschneider placed the ball in the low, far corner in the 43rd minute for the host Gators in a Class 4A North quarterfinal.
Perry Hall had several chances in the first half, but Sherwood keeper Sean Prim came up with the saves.
The Warriors nearly scored in the 76th minute when D.J. Reeves broke free on a fast break, but his shot hit the post.
Perry Hall hosts Dulaney in the next round.
Dulaney 3, Kenwood 0: Sam Hillman had a goal and an assist for the visiting Lions (10-6). The Bluebirds finished the season 9-3-1.
No. 8 Catonsville 2, Dulaney 0: Jennifer Nonn scored both goals to lead the host Comets (14-1) past the Lions in a Class 4A North regional quarterfinal.
No. 14 Atholton 5, Hammond 0: Jenna Brewer had two goals to power the host Raiders (10-5) past the Bears in a Class 3A East quarterfinal.
Marriotts Ridge 2, Glenelg 1: Taylor Hensh had a goal and an assist for the host Mustangs (9-5-1) in a Class 2A North quarterfinal.
No. 3 Glenelg 9, Long Reach 1: Megan Taylor scored four goals and Stephanie Asher added three to power the host Gladiators (15-1) past the Lightning in a Class 2A East regional semifinal. Glenelg led 7-0 at the half.
No. 10 Century 2, Towson 0: Kailey Wolfe and Shelby Mercer each scored a goal to lead the host Knights (12-2-2) past the Generals in a Class 2A North regional semifinal. Century faces Winters Mill today at 2 p.m. at McDaniel College in the regional final.
Marriotts Ridge 2, River Hill 1: Jasmine Williams scored the game-winner with 12 minutes left to lift the host Mustangs (12-4) over the Hawks in Class 2A East.
River Hill took a 1-0 lead with 3:26 left in the first half, but Marriotts Ridge tied the score 30 seconds later.
