Varsity roundup (Oct. 6): Gilman upsets No. 5 Calvert Hall in football

Zachary Dixon rushed for a 5-yard touchdown with 30 seconds left and Piper Bond made an interception on the final play to lead host Gilman to an upset of No. 5 Calvert Hall, 35-28, in football on Friday night.

The Greyhounds improved to 2-4, 1-1 Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference and the Cardinals fell to 4-3, 1-2.

The score was 28-28 to start the fourth quarter. Gilman's Purnell Hill completed a 25-yard pass to Jackson McCambridge to setup Dixon's touchdown run. Calvert Hall got the ball back and drove to the Gilman 15-yard line in the closing seconds before throwing a pass that Bond intercepted.

Gilman coach Tim Holley credited the play of Brandon Madison, with three touchdowns, and Mason Freeman, who blocked two punts that gave the Greyhounds good field position.

Severn 41, Maret (D.C.) 24: Craig Stevens completed four touchdown passes in the first half to lead the host Admirals (6-0) past the Frogs (3-2).

Boys soccer

No. 1 Archbishop Curley 5, Archbishop Spalding 2: The visiting Friars (13-1-1, 10-1 MIAA A Conference) went on a 3-0 run in the second half to beat the Cavaliers (4-10-1, 2-8). Ben Stitz had a hat trick and an assist for Curley.

Field hockey

No. 8 McDonogh 4, Bryn Mawr 1: Emma Schettig scored twice to lead the host Eagles (8-2, 6-2 Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference) past the Mawrtians (2-6-1, 1-5-1).

Maryvale 2, Mount de Sales 1: Courtney Kelly scored two goals to lead the visiting Lions (8-5, 6-1 IAAM B Conference) past the Sailors (1-7-1, 1-3-1).

Severn 4, Park 1: Jillian North made six saves for the Admirals (6-4, 5-0 IAAM B Conference). The host Bruins fell to 7-2, 6-1.
