Varsity roundup (Sept. 29): No. 1 Archbishop Curley has to rally for 2-2 tie in boys soccer

Top-ranked Archbishop Curley fell behind and had to rally for a 2-2 tie with No. 8 C. Milton Wright in boys soccer Friday.

Brandon Knapp scored the game-tying goal on a header seven minutes into the second half for the host Friars (11-0-1).

Curley went up 1-0 in the first half on a goal by Nick Richardson before Brett Lindsey scored two in a row for the Mustangs (5-0-2).

No. 2 McDonogh 6, John Carroll 1: Casey Settleman had a hat trick and Mason Christian had two goals to lead the visiting Eagles (10-1, 8-1 Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference) past the Patriots (2-8, 2-7).

No. 11 Calvert Hall 3, St. Paul's 2: Sean Barwick had a goal and two assists to lead the visiting Cardinals (7-4, 5-4 MIAA A Conference) in a come-from-behind victory over the Crusaders (1-8, 1-8).

Friends 3, St. Mary's 0: The host Quakers stayed undefeated and improved to 8-0-1 overall and in the MIAA B Conference by shutting out the Saints (1-7-1, 1-7-1). Friends' goals were by Andre Ayers, Paul Benzer and an own goal.


St. Paul's 29, St. Vincent Pallotti 8: The host Crusaders (2-2, 1-1 MIAA B Conference) took an early 8-0 lead and cruised past the Panthers (2-2, 1-1).

Field hockey

No. 9 Garrison Forest 2, No. 7 McDonogh 0: Riley Patro and Claire Jones combined on both goals as the host Grizzlies (8-2, 5-1 Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference) shut out the Eagles (6-2, 4-2).

"I thought they [McDonogh] were going to score a couple of times," Garrison Forest coach Traci Davis said. "It's so tough to get the ball in the cage."

Maryvale 2, John Carroll 1, OT: Ally Furnari scored twice to lead the Lions (6-5; 4-1 IAAM B Conference) past the host Patriots (4-5-1, 3-2).

Annapolis Area Christian 2, Elizabeth Seton (D.C.) 1: Bianca Iannicelli and Lexie Steele scored goals on assists from Lizy Lenhart and Maggie Anderson for the Eagles (3-4-1). Arianna Crawley added four saves in the victory for AACS.

Bryn Mawr 2, St. Mary's 1: Molly McAteer had a goal off an assist from Spira Rosseau for the Saints (2-5-1).

Girls golf

Medalist honors: Katrina Schultz of Severna Park shot a 44 to earn medalist honors in an A Division match at Bay Hills. Schultz finished two shots better than teammate Grace Appel, who was second with a 46. Samanth Lynchard of Broadneck and Karlie Zamora of North County each shot 47 to tie for third.
