Varsity roundup (April 29): Calvert Hall posts back-to-back 'A' shutouts

No. 1 Calvert Hall flexed its baseball muscles by winning back-to-back shutouts against Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference opponents.

The Cardinals (18-2, 11-2) beat St. Paul's, 20-0, on Friday and John Carroll, 9-0, on Saturday.

Against the Crusaders (2-14, 2-12), Calvert Hall put together a 13-run fourth inning. Matt Henschel went five innings, gave up two hits, walked one and struck out four for the win.

Against the Patriots (8-8, 7-6), the Cardinals scored four runs in the first inning. Starter Andrew Rosso went five innings, gave up four hits and struck out three.

No. 7 St. Mary's 12, Mount Saint Joseph 5: Winning pitcher Brock Goodwin worked four innings and struck out six as the Saints (15-8, 7-6 MIAA A Conference) beat the Gaels (9-13, 2-10).

Boys lacrosse

No. 7 Loyola Blakefield 12, No. 12 Archbishop Spalding 8: Towson-commit Phil Wies had a hat trick for the host Dons (5-5, 3-1 MIAA A Conference), who won their third straight. The Cavaliers fell to 5-8, 1-4

Girls lacrosse

No. 3 Notre Dame Prep 15, No. 8 Glenelg Country 5: The host Blazers (16-2, 10-1 Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference) bounced back from Thursday's 9-4 loss to No. 1 McDonogh.

No. 13 St. Paul's 13, John Carroll 9: Ashlyn McGovern had five goals to lead the Gators (9-7, 5-6 IAAM A Conference) past the host Patriots (5-11, 4-7).
