Winning pitcher Jess Cummings struck out 15 and host Northern-Calvert shut out No. 11 Mount de Sales, 2-0, in softball Saturday.

The Patriots (8-1), ranked No. 1 nationally by MaxPreps last year, have won the past six Class 3A state championships.

Northern scored both runs in the third inning, the first on an RBI double by Sarah Bennett. The Sailors fell to 7-2.

No. 9 Hereford 5, Dulaney 0: Left-hander LeAnne Collins (7-0) gave up four hits, walked one and struck out three as the host Bulls (8-1) shut out the Lions (3-5).

Germantown Academy 14, No. 2 Calvert Hall 3: The host Cardinals (11-3) fell behind the Patriots (7-4) 10-0 after three innings.

Boys lacrosse

No. 6 Gilman 11, Fallston 4: Chase Wittich had three goals and an assist as the Greyhounds (7-3) beat the host Cougars (3-4) to win their second straight game.

Mount de Sales wins two: Mandy Ignacio totaled 10 goals and five assists in two games as the host Sailors (4-7) beat North Carroll, 16-9, and River Hill, 11-10, at their Friendship Tournament.

Against the Hawks (4-4), Ignacio scored the game-winner with three minutes left.
