McDonogh boys hold off Severn in lacrosse, 9-8

The visiting Severn boys lacrosse team played a great first half and held a one-goal lead at the break. But No. 2 McDonogh regrouped in the second half, taking a two-goal lead with 6:30 left to play and held on to win, 9-8, Friday night in both teams' Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference opener.

The Admirals used off-ball movement to take an early 2-0 lead and led 4-3 at the break. But McDonogh's Bobby Austin scored his fourth goal late in the game. Severn had the ball with a 1:30 to go, but couldn't finish.

No. 1 Boys' Latin 12, No. 11 Archbishop Spalding 4: Colin Chell scored six goals and Shack Stanwick had five assists to lead the visiting Lakers (7-0, 1-0 MIAA A Conference) past the Cavaliers (6-3, 0-1).

No. 3 Calvert Hall 15, Mount St. Joseph 8: Timmy Kelly scored seven goals and the visiting Cardinals (9-1, 1-0 MIAA A Conference) pulled away from the Gaels (6-3, 0-1) in the second half.

Mount St. Joseph got within two goals of Calvert Hall in the second half, but no closer.

No. 5 St. Paul's 10, No. 9 St. Mary's 9: Down by four goals heading into the fourth quarter, the host Crusaders (5-3, 1-0 MIAA A Conference) went on a 6-1 run to beat the Saints (6-2, 0-1).

Mikey Wynne and Henry Riehl scored three goals each for St. Paul's.

New Town 15, Randallstown 6: The host Titans (3-2) won their third straight, beating the Rams (1-4).

DeShawn Thompson scored five goals and Austin Dews had three goals and five assists for New Town.

Girls lacrosse

No. 1 McDonogh 15, No. 11 John Carroll 6: The host Eagles (8-0, 5-0 Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference) got their 99th straight win behind three goals and one assist from Megan Whittle. The Patriots fell to 4-4, 2-4.

No. 7 Severn 14, No. 9 St. Mary's 6: Carolina Steele scored five goals to power the visiting Admirals (6-2, 4-2 IAAM A Conference) past the Saints (3-3, 3-3).

No. 12 Archbishop Spalding 15, Mount de Sales 13: Maggie Kaulius and Alexis Phillips each scored four goals to power the host Cavaliers (7-4, 3-2 IAAM A Conference) past the Sailors (0-9, 0-6).

No. 1 Calvert Hall 4, C. Milton Wright 0: Winner Manny Rodriguez threw a complete game, giving up two hits, walking one and striking out 11 as the host Cardinals (7-2) beat the Mustangs (2-4).

No. 4 Reservoir 10, River Hill 5: Right-handed winner Jack Barry (2-0) struck out three in six innings as the Gators (6-0) beat the host Hawks (2-4).

No. 7 Mount St. Joseph 4, John Carroll 0: Joel Kenney and Matt Chism threw a combined shutout for the visiting Gaels (4-4, 3-2 MIAA A Conference).

The Patriots fell to 2-3, 1-3. Kenney had nine strikeouts over six innings.

No. 9 North Harford 7, Patterson Mill 3: Luke Johnson had a single and a double to lead the host Hawks (5-0-1) past the Huskies (2-5).

Winner Brandon Plummer struck out four in 31/3 innings.

No. 11 Atholton 8, Wilde Lake 5: Right-hander Nick Rauling (1-0) pitched 21/3 innings to lead the visiting Raiders (6-0) past the Wildecats (2-4).


No. 2 Northeast 11, Severna Park 1: Winner Brooke Steinbach pitched six innings and got eight strikeouts as the Eagles (7-0) beat the host Falcons.

No. 5 River Hill 12, Reservoir 2: The host Hawks (5-0) were down 2-0 to the Gators before getting seven hits and eight runs in the second inning.

River Hill's Courtney Colosimo went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored.

No. 7 Glen Burnie 15, Arundel 4: Jessica Robinson (3-for-5) had a home run, and Ali Moos pitched two innings for the win as the visiting Gophers (6-1) beat the Wildcats.
