The No. 3 Mount St. Joseph basketball team got a tough draw, DeMatha of Hyattsville, in the second round of the Alhambra Catholic Invitational Tournament. The Stags (13-17) lost by one point to La Lumiere (Indiana), nationally ranked No. 8 by USA Today, on Thursday. But a hot-shooting Gaels squad won, 80-68, Friday night.
"We shot the ball really well," coach Pat Clatchey said. "Anytime you score 80 points, you have a good chance to win."
Ohio State-bound Kameron Williams led the Gaels with 26 points, and Phil Booth added 16.
Mount St. Joseph will face a familiar foe, No. 2 St. Frances, in today's consolation championship at 4:45 p.m.
Mount St. Joseph has gone 0-3 against the Panthers. The last loss was in the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference championship, 75-63, on Feb. 17.
No. 2 St. Frances 58, Bishop Walsh 41: The Panthers (32-6) bounced back from an opening-round loss to hand the host Spartans (20-9) their second-straight loss at the Alhambra.
St. Frances lost to Benedictine (Va.), 60-43, on Thursday.
Boys lacrosse
Boys' Latin 11, William Penn Charter (Pa.) 3: The visiting Lakers (3-0), led by Johns Hopkins-bound Shack Stanwick with four goals and two assists, scored five goals in the third quarter to pull away from the Quakers (0-2).
Mount St. Joseph 18, John Carroll 4: Clay Kirby had five goals and Shawn Carter had two goals and six assists to lead the host Gaels (3-0) past the Patriots (0-1).
Severn 16, Archbishop Curley 6: Ryan Lamon had five goals and three assists to lead the host Admirals (2-0) past the Friars.
Girls lacrosse
McDonogh 11, Milton (Ga.) 8: McDonogh won its 71st straight game, defeating Milton (Georgia) in Vero Beach, Fla.
The four-time defending Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland champions got three goals each from Megan Whittle and Elizabeth George to beat Milton (3-1), a seven-time Georgia state champ.
On their spring break trip to Florida, the Eagles (2-0) also defeated seven-time defending Florida state champion Vero Beach, 12-6, on Wednesday. McDonogh's winning streak is the third-longest in Baltimore-area girls high school lacrosse history behind 103 set by Loch Raven in 1982 and tied by Mount Hebron in 2007; Loch Raven also has a 104-game unbeaten streak.

Glenelg Country School 10, Chapelgate Christian Academy 3: Miguel Flores had two home runs and Dylan Farnell had a two-run single to start the scoring for the Dragons.

Seton Keough 9, Archbishop Spalding 1: Hannah Tavik gave up one run off three hits and struck out 15 for the win.
