The No. 2 Mount St. Joseph basketball team got a tough draw in the opening round of the Alhambra Catholic Invitational at Frostburg State on Thursday night.
McDonald's All-American Melo Trimble and the defending tournament champion Bishop Denis J. O'Connell (Va.) proved too much for the Gaels (32-5), who lost, 72-66.
Mount St. Joseph trailed by double digits and rallied to tie the game with three minutes left, but the Knights (19-11) regrouped and won.
Phil Booth scored 18 points, Jaylen Adams had 19 and Jordan McNeil had 16 for the Gaels. Trimble had a game-high 25 points.
DeMatha 68, No. 3 Calvert Hall 60: Drew Edwards scored 13 points, but the Cardinals (28-7) couldn't overcome poor shooting in the first half at the Alhambra Catholic Invitational.
The Stags (28-5) led by as many as nine points in the second half and the Cardinals face Bishop Walsh, a 101-39 loser to St. John's (D.C.), today at 4 p.m.
Calvert Hall 10, Hill Academy (Canada) 9: Timmy Kelly had a game-high eight goals, scoring the go-ahead and assisting on the eventual game-winner for the host Cardinals (3-0).
