The No. 1 Archbishop Spalding girls basketball team led for most of the game, but St. John's (D.C.) slowly began coming back. And in the fourth quarter, the Cadets (31-1) had a scoring breakout to win, 54-44, in the championship game of the Bishop Walsh Invitational tournament in Cumberland on Saturday night.
The Cavaliers (29-2) led 14-8 after the first quarter, but St. John's won the next two quarters, 9-6 and 17-16.
Spalding's 36-34 lead at the start of the fourth quarter quickly evaporated during a 20-8 scoring onslaught.
The Cadets held Spalding's top scorer of the night, Camille Calhoun, to 11points.
Tori Oliver had a game-high 18 points for St. John's, which finished 3-0 at the tournament.
Spalding went 2-1.
Good Counsel 65, No. 3 McDonogh 59: Deja Logan scored 23 points, but the Eagles (22-9) came up short, falling to the Falcons (19-4) in the third-place consolation game of the Bishop Walsh Invitational.
McDonogh posted a 1-2 record at the tournament. Good Counsel went 2-1.
No. 11 Seton Keough 70, Bishop Walsh 8: The Gators (12-17) handed the host Spartans their third straight loss at their tournament in the seventh-place game.
Seton Keough went 1-2 at the tournament.
