Third-ranked Severna Park and No. 5 Reservoir both pride themselves on defense, but it was the Falcons who were rewarded for their ability to develop an effective attack in Tuesday's first District V championship in girls soccer at Arundel.

Sarah Peterson's goal in the 56th minute was the winner for the Falcons, who controlled the midfield for much of the game. It was the 11th straight shutout for the Falcons (14-1), who enter the Class 4A East playoffs as the top seed.

"The first three or four weeks of the season, we focused primarily on keeping our defense organized," Severna Park coach Todd Clark said. "As the season went on, we began to focus more on attack, getting ball forward quickly, getting the ball behind the [defenders] and creating scoring opportunities. With our system, we try and stay wide and use the width for our forwards until we get into the attacking third. Then, everyone is going at the goal."

The Gators (11-3-1) entered the game as the No. 1 seed in Class 3A East.
