Christi Laite had a great season last year, leading Severna Park to an 18-3 record in volleyball. The only problem was that all three losses came against county rival Broadneck, with one in the county championship and another in the regional championship. Broadneck went on to win the state Class 4A title. Severna Park went home.
Last night, Laite and her teammates got a measure of revenge, as the host and fifth-ranked Falcons (5-1) defeated the No. 3 Bruins, 25-27, 25-21, 27-25, 25-14, in a key match.
The senior, who is leaning toward attending Delaware, took over in the third and fourth games, contributing three kills, two blocks and three aces down the stretch to pace Severna Park. For the evening, she had 11 kills, 4 digs, 7 blocks and was 18 of 21 from the service line.
"This has definitely been one of our goals," said Laite, a four-year starter. "We beat them for the county championship my sophomore year, but they beat us in the regionals and won the state title. I knew - even when things got shaky tonight - that we could do this."
After the teams split the first two games, the match turned in the third. The Bruins (3-1) got six straight service winners from Shelby Greene to break open a 15-15 game and take a 21-15 lead. The Falcons responded, using kills by Tempe Martens and Trish Kallis, as well as two aces by Megan Chalk to win eight of the next 10 points and take a 23-22 lead. The teams were tied at 25 before the Falcons got kills from Laite on the last two points to win the game, 27-25.
The Falcons dominated the last game, taking a 20-9 lead. The Bruins rallied to cut the lead to eight at 22-14, but got no closer.
"Our serving was the difference," Falcons coach Jamie Leventry said. "We've really been working on that, and it paid off tonight. We put a lot of pressure on them with the way we served."
Laite says the win will serve the Falcons well as they move into the latter stages of the season.
"We had a few iffy moments in some of those games, but we overcame them," she said. "This will be such a huge confidence boost for us going forward."
