Mount Hebron The senior attacker wrote her name firmly in the Vikings' record book this season - no easy task considering the program's storied history. Bruns set a mark for most goals in a season with 103, breaking the record set by Cathy Reese, then Cathy Nelson, 16 years ago. She also set single-game records for goals (12) and points (19). In leading the Howard County champions to the state Class 3A-2A final, she averaged 5.2 goals and scored eight in the state semifinal win over Annapolis. Bruns, who will play next season at Florida, also contributed 63 assists.
Marriotts Ridge The newest program in Howard County came on strong in its third season at the varsity level. The Mustangs finished 11-2 with both losses coming by one goal. Only an 8-7 loss to Mount Hebron kept them from taking the county title. Last season, the Mustangs finished 9-6, but Gaieski said she always had high expectations for her team. This season, she said, that finally rubbed off on the girls, who started to believe they could win. They worked together and jelled as a team. Gaieski also credited assistant coach Amanda Tack.
