Boys Player of the Year
Phil Martinelli, Marriotts RidgeMartinelli was the dominant player on Howard County's most dominant team. The senior forward had 15 goals and 11 assists, leading the team in both categories. Martinelli had a goal or an assist in 14 of the team's17 games. He also scored some of the team's biggest goals. Martinelli had two goals in the regional championship victory over River Hill. He also bent a free kick around the wall for the first goal in the county championship game, also against the Hawks. Martinelli has committed to play soccer at Towson.
Boys Coach of the Year
Kevin Flynn, Marriotts RidgeFlynn guided the Mustangs to a 16-1 season, with their only loss coming to James M. Bennett in the Class 2A state semifinals. The Mustangs also sat atop The Baltimore Sun's poll for several weeks during the regular season. Flynn said the key to the team's success was the players' commitment to sacrificing individual honors to buy into the team concept.
