PLAYER OF THE YEAR: Jon Selfridge, Glenelg
It was tough to top last season for Selfridge, as the Lynchburg-bound goalie's team won the Class 3A-2A state championship and he was a second-team All-Metro selection. But the senior played even better this year, leading his team to an undefeated season (18-0) and the Class 2A-1A championship.
He was a second-team All-Metro selection again this year, compiling 169 saves while stopping 69 percent of shots. "You would think a kid that wins second-team All-Metro and wins a state championship would sit back and rest," Glenelg coach Josh Hatmaker said. "That's not what Jon did. He was one of our hardest workers throughout the year, and it made him a better player."
COACH OF THE YEAR: Bryan Cole, Reservoir
Cole's players learned throughout their high school careers that hard work could pay off. When Cole took over as coach of the Gators three years ago, his current seniors were freshmen on a team that didn't win a game. The Gladiators won five their second year and two last year before going 12-5 this season and advancing to the Class 3A-2A South regional final. "I'm a believer in those kids," Cole said. "A big thing for us was getting them to believe it, too. More than anything, having a season like we did this year is helping to highlight a winning program. People want to be part of that."
