Appold was the spark to a Havre de Grace offense that developed into one of the area's most potent in the second half of the season. He completed 129 of 235 passes for 2,012 yards and 20 touchdowns, helping Havre de Grace make a surprising trip to the Class 1A state semifinals.

The 5-foot-11 senior kept receivers Travis Brown and Arthur Ibewuike very busy - the pair combined for 93 catches and 1,713 yards. In Appold's second year as the starting quarterback, he helped Havre de Grace finish 8-5. The state semifinals was the furthest Havre de Grace had gone in 10 years.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER
C.J. Townes
Joppatowne

Townes stepped in as the team's quarterback midway through the season and helped the Mariners finish 8-2 and make the state playoffs. But he also was a leader on defense at free safety. The junior led the Upper Chesapeake Bay Athletic Conference with seven interceptions and made numerous big plays on defense.

Mariners coach Bill Waibel said he doesn't like his starting quarterback to play defense also, but Townes proved too valuable. Townes played a deep center field-type position because Joppatowne uses a 4-4 defense. The Mariners also put him at cornerback.

Coach of the Year
Johnny Brooks
Havre de Grace

Brooks guided the Warriors to an 8-5 record, capped by two road wins in the state playoffs. After pulling out a wild, 51-50 victory at Catoctin in the first round of the Class 1A North regional playoffs, Havre de Grace surprised New Town, 22-15, in the regional final before losing to Fort Hill (57-14) in the state semifinals.

Brooks helped the Warriors turn things around after a 4-6 finish last year and a slow start this season. They lost seven games in which they had leads in the fourth quarter last year, and Brooks pushed his players to do more offseason conditioning. In addition, Havre de Grace had only 20 players on its roster and had to overcome the loss of several players to injury during the season.
