Girls track: Performer of the Year

Maura Linde Century, junior

Coaches say it's teams that win championships and not individuals, but Linde did a whole lot to help Century earn its first indoor state title this winter.

She won the 1,600 and 3,200 and took second in the 800; she also ran on the winning 3,200 relay team. In all, Linde had a hand in 38 of the team's 47.5 points. Century needed all of them, edging North Hagerstown (45), Long Reach (44) and Digital Harbor (41) to win the Class 2A crown.

"When you can run 6,400 meters in a meet and take three firsts and a second, that's incredible," Century coach Tony Griner said. "But she was most proud of that team state title. She cared more about that than any gold around her neck."

Linde had similar performances in the Carroll County and West regional meets. In the regional, she won the 1,600 and 3,200 and took fourth in the 800. Linde also ran on the first-place 3,200 relay. She was first in the 800 and 1,600, second in the 3,200 and ran on the winning 3,200 relay at the county meet.
