Funmi Alabi
Long Reach
Alabi had been one of the area's top sprinters before slipping a bit, then returning to form this spring. The senior capped things off with spectacular efforts in the postseason races. She swept the 100 and 200 in the Howard County, Class 3A East regional and state meets. Her performance at states might have been the best of all. She set a Class 3A record in the 100, winning in 11.81 seconds. Before that, she edged fellow All-Metro pick Zoey Whittington of Catonsville in the 200 in 24.82.Lauren Allam
Chesapeake-AA
The junior came through at the right time for the Cougars. Already one of the area's top performers in the discus, she took it to another level in the postseason. Allam threw 137 feet, 11 inches to win the Class 4A East alhampionship, then took second place at the state meet. She threw 137 feet there to finish just 15 inches behind winner Emily Vannoy of Thomas Johnson, one of the best athletes ever in shot and discus.Kristen Brown
McDonogh
After a spectacular indoor season, Brown kept it going outdoors. She and Amanda Kimbers led the way as McDonogh remained No. 1 in The Baltimore Sun's poll all season and scored a huge victory at the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland title meet. Brown, a junior, won the long jump (18-0.5) and 100 hurdles (13.96, meet record) and ran on the winning 400- and 800-meter relay teams. She was the indoor track Performer of the Year.Madeline Dulac
McDonogh
McDonogh was already very strong in sprints and relays, and Dulac gave the Eagles help in the distance races, especially in the IAAM championship meet. Already a strong cross country runner, the sophomore swept the 1,600 and 3,200 at the IAAM meet this spring. She also anchored the winning 3,200 relay team. Dulac won the 1,600 in 5:15.29 and took the 3,200 in 11:27.52 as the Eagles rolled to an easy team victory.Alexis Franklin
Old Mill
Franklin has developed into one of the state's top 300-meter hurdlers. The freshman ran the fifth-fastest time in state history (43.35 seconds) at the state meet and was third in Class 4A. Her time is an Old Mill record. Franklin set a meet record for the 300 hurdles in the Pikesville Invitational earlier in the season. She won the Anne Arundel County and Class 4A East regional titles and lost only one race until the state finals. Franklin also ran on the 400 and 1,600 relays and did the 100 hurdles.Amanda Kimbers
McDonogh
The senior is headed for Georgetown, and the Hoyas will are lucky to have her. Kimbers and teammate Kristen Brown anchored McDonogh as the top-ranked Eagles steamrollered the competition en route to the IAAM title. Kimbers won the 100 in a meet record time of 11.90 seconds. She also took the 200 in 24.58 and ran on the victorious 800 and 1,600 relay teams. Like Brown, Kimbers did so many things that helped the team.Maura Linde
Century
The sophomore maintained her standing as one of the state's best distance runners in any class. Linde won the 800, 1,600 and 3,200 at the Carroll County championship meet, then took the 800 and 1,600 in the Class 2A West regional meet. She pulled out a close win in the 800 at the state meet in 2:17.35, edging Middletown's Brittany Caudle by less than a second. Linde took third in the 1,600, running the third-fastest time in any class in a tight race. She finished fifth in the 3,200.Alyssa McClure
Digital Harbor
She keeps getting better and played an important role in the Rams taking second place in the state Class 1A title meet. McClure won the 100 (11.86, class record), finished second in the 400 and also helped out on victorious relay teams in the 400 and 1,600. McClure has been one of Digital Harbor's top sprinters since her freshman year, and the combination of she and Chelsea Walker gave the Rams a solid 1-2 punch.Amber Melville
North Carroll
There's no question that Melville is the state's top high jumper. She won the Class 4A state title with a class record-tying leap of 5-8. That was the best jump in any of the four classes. Melville, who also won the state title indoors, hit 5-9 at a meet earlier this season. The sophomore's jumps of 5-8 and 5-9 were the best of any metro-area high jumper this season. She took first in the Carroll County title meet with a mark of 5-6, winning by four inches.Angela Mensah
Mount Hebron
She was again consistent at the big meets. The senior won the triple and long jumps at the Howard County title meet. After that, she took second in the long jump at the Class 2A South regional and third in the triple jump. Mensah came in second in the state in the triple jump, losing to North Point's Geranda Williams, who also beat her at the regional meet. In addition, Mensah took third in long jump, where the top three girls finished within 3.5 inches of one another.Brinae Robinson
Western
The sophomore played a big role in Western running away from the pack to win the Class 3A state championship. Robinson won the 800 meters (2:17.61) and ran on the victorious 3,200 and second-place 1,600 relays to help the Doves break open a tight battle. Her first-place finish in the 800-meter race sparked a 20-point performance from Western in that event; the Doves also took third and fourth. It helped turn the meet.Sasha Smallwood
Pikesville
The sophomore broke through this year and might be the state's top pole vaulter. She won the Class 1A state title, vaulting 10-6 to win the meet. That victory followed wins in the Class 1A regional and Baltimore County meets. In the county meet, Smallwood edged out Jordana Lehman of Hereford - who later won the state title in Class 3A. Smallwood also can help out in running events and on relays. Coach Gerard Filosa said she's only going to get better.Zoey Whittington
Catonsville
She followed a spectacular indoor season with a strong outdoor campaign. Her emergence as a top sprinter, along with teammate Kellie Christian, gave the Comets a powerful 1-2 combination. Whittington won the Class 3A 400-meter dash at the state meet in 55.48 and finished second in the 200. The sophomore ran on the winning 1,600 relay and the second-place 400 relay teams. Whittington had a hand in 36 of Catonsville's 59 points, helping the Comets take second in the state.Moriah Young
McDonogh
The senior was dominant in the shot put and also very strong in the discus. Her throw of 44-6 in the IAAM title meet set a meet record by an amazing 5 feet, 1 inch. She won the event by 6 feet, 1 inch. Young's winning throw is believed to be the only one over 44 feet this season by an area girl in the shot put. She finished second to teammate Candace Hendricks in the discus. Young is headed to the University of Maryland.
