Albert Oni, MercyThe Magic fell one game short of its goal of winning the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference championship, losing to Archbishop Spalding in the title game, but the team overcame a number of obstacles to make its improbable run.
Oni, in his eighth season, was forced to make adjustments from start to finish, guiding the No. 2 Magic to a 12-5-3 season. The preseason began with late word that two standout players had transferred, and then the team dealt with injuries and illnesses over the course of the season.
But Oni was able to keep the team playing as one, anchored by a group of resilient seniors.
After a 3-0 loss to McDonogh late in the regular season, the Magic came back one week later to claim a 1-0 quarterfinal win against the Eagles on its way to the championship game.Copyright © 2015, The Baltimore Sun
