Girls lacrosse: Players to watch

Liza Blue

Garrison Forest, midfield, senior

The Virginia-bound Blue has led the Grizzlies in every statistical category since her sophomore year. Last season, she had 60 goals, nine assists and 61 draw controls. She scored five or more goals against six top opponents, including six against No. 1 McDonogh.

Jody Cumberpatch

Annapolis, attack, senior

Anne Arundel County's leading scorer last season with 67 goals and 37 assists, Cumberpatch excels with field vision, a variety of shots and deceptive moves around the crease. She had five goals in last spring's state semifinal loss to Mount Hebron. She is headed to Georgetown.

Mackenzie Cyr

Winters Mill, attack, senior

A powerful left-handed shooter, Cyr rolled up 53 goals and 75 assists last season for the state semifinalists. Fearless around the crease with great placement and timing on her shot, the Penn State-bound Cyr is also a force on the draw, controlling 79 a year ago.

Taylor George

Broadneck, midfield, senior

The most complete player on a veteran team, George excels all over the field. She can run all day and always plays hard, impacting every statistic from goals to draw controls to caused turnovers. Headed for North Carolina in the fall, she had 28 goals and 26 assists last season

Beth Glaros

Wilde Lake, midfield, senior

The Maryland-bound Glaros is capable of scoring 10 goals a game, but she stands out for her ability to make things happen. She makes the big plays on defense, is a force on the draw and is always looking for her teammates. Last season, she scored 90 goals and had 10 assists.

Brooke Griffin

South River, midfield, senior

The quick, versatile Griffin excels all over the field but nowhere more than on the draw, where she won 96 last season, many drawn to herself. The 2009 Anne Arundel County Player of the Year, a Maryland commitment, is coming off a 66-goal, 27-assist season.

Margaret Smith

McDonogh, midfield, senior

Her speed and physical presence make the Notre Dame-bound Smith perhaps the toughest matchup in the area. Simply able to overwhelm opponents, Smith dominated from end to end, making big plays and leading the Eagles in draw controls, ground balls and interceptions.

Covie Stanwick

Notre Dame Prep, attack, junior

A leader at running the offense, Stanwick excels with her ability to find the smallest holes in a defense and feed her teammates with precision passes for 48 assists last season. That vision, game sense and tricky stickwork also translate to her own shooting ability with 39 goals last year.

Allison Thornton

Broadneck, defense, senior

The key line defender on a team that allowed only four opponents to score in double figures, the Towson-bound Thornton might get around the field a little more this season to show off her versatility. Excellent on the draw circle, she led the Bruins in ground balls last season.

Taylor Virden

McDonogh, defense, senior

The best line defender on the No. 1 team last season, Virden helped hold opponents to 6.5 goals per game. Quick and athletic, she excelled as an off-ball defender, often closing in to force turnovers or snag interceptions Also great on the clears, she is headed for Duke.
