Throughout most of Friday night's game, Poly quarterback Antoine Goodson and running back Gabriel Ali-El provided most of the offense, but when both got hurt and left the game in the third quarter, the No. 14 Engineers held on to beat No. 11 Patterson, 38-18, in a Baltimore City Division I game.

Goodson ran for 153 yards on 17 carries and scored two touchdowns before he left the game with a shoulder injury early in the quarter. Shortly thereafter, Ali-El, who ran for 131 yards and one touchdown on 15 carries, went to the hospital to be checked out for a possible concussion.

A senior, Goodson, has scored 13 touchdowns this season, and the Engineers' complex offense revolves around him. Backup Darrell Milburn stepped in and, despite throwing an interception soon after he came off the bench, held the offense together and scored a touchdown.

"Of course he's our star player," Poly coach Roger Wrenn said of Goodson, "and when he went down, we could have easily folded our tent, but we brought the young sophomore kid in, and while he was a little nervous, he got the job done and kept us focused and our defense stepped it up."

When Goodson went out early in the third quarter, the Engineers led 22-12. Milburn stepped in, and on second-and-17 from the Patterson 28, he threw an interception that Jonathan Gause caught and then lateraled to Tyrell Addison, who ran to Poly's 33-yard line.

Two plays later, Deonta Winston ran 18 yards for a touchdown. At that point, two missed conversion attempts made the difference as Poly (4-0 overall, 3-0 division) held on to a 22-18 lead.

Patterson (3-1, 1-1), which upset Dunbar two weeks ago, never got closer.

"Their line just really was more physical than us, and they executed their blocks," Patterson coach Corey Johnson said. "Even out on the perimeter, their receivers were doing an excellent job blocking. ... When they wanted it, they rallied around their team when Antoine went out of the game and just pushed us back."
