Austin, 5 feet 9 and 170 pounds, rushed for 1,701 yards in 14 games, scoring 32 touchdowns this season to raise his career total to 53 over his two seasons at Dunbar. Defensively, Austin intercepted six passes and returned a fumble 60 yards for a touchdown.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER
Ben Eaton, Gilman
The 5-foot-11, 225-pound senior led the Greyhounds to a share of their eighth Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference title in the 10-year tenure of coach Biff Poggi.

Eaton, who is being highly recruited by a number of Division I programs, was the Greyhounds' No. 1 tackler with 123. He also ranked No. 1 on his team with 23 tackles for lost yardage and had five sacks and three interceptions for a team that tied league rivals Loyola and McDonogh for the conference crown.

COACH OF THE YEAR
Dante Jones, Edmondson
After a 4-6 season last year, the second-year head coach took the Red Storm to the program's second Class 2A state final -its first at Baltimore's M&T Bank Stadium. Jones, who developed a quarterback in sophomore Carroll Washington, led the Red Storm to a 37-9 state championship victory over McDonough of Charles County. The Red Storm's 13-1 record included a 37-17 victory over Baltimore County power Hereford in the Class 2A North regional title game.

Jones was a linebacker for Dunbar in 1994, when the Poets became the city's first program to win a Maryland public school state title.
