Player of the Year
Louis Birdsong, Mount St. JosephThe unquestioned leader of the top-ranked Gaels (38-1), who set a state record for most wins in a season, set the example for teamwork and effort.
Birdsong, a 6-foot-7, 240-pound forward headed to George Mason, averaged 12.2 points, 8.5 rebounds, two blocks and 1.5 steals per game, with many of his statistics coming at key moments.
Bob Gibbons, who has been a recruiter for 32 years for the All Star Sports Report, appreciates Birdsong's all-around excellence.
"Birdsong's a guy who's going to a smaller program, but will win games there and put up numbers," Gibbons said. "He may not be on a lot of people's national radar right now, but he will be down the road."
Coach of the Year
Pat Clatchey, Mount St. JosephClatchey's calm, confident demeanor on the sideline had a lot to do with the Gaels' unprecedented success this season. Mount St. Joseph repeated as the regular-season champion in both the Baltimore Catholic League and Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference.
The Gaels then won both tournaments to go with the Gonzaga (D.C.) and Benedictine (Va.) tournament championships.
With a state record for wins, the Gaels (38-1) matched the Dunbar teams of 1983 and '84 as the only Baltimore teams to win 30 games or more in back-to-back years.
