•The senior is perhaps the best distance runner in the state. He won the Class 3A state title in cross country and took the 1,600-meter crown indoors. Bazell combines with teammate Michael Lynch to give the Raiders a formidable duo in distance.
Eric Franklin•Archbishop Curley
•He played a big role in the Friars winning last spring's Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association team title. The senior was undefeated in the 110-meter hurdles last spring.
•The junior won the 55-meter hurdles plus the long and triple jumps during the MIAA indoor title meet and can also run relays.
Dorian Johnson•Mount St. Joseph
•Last spring, the versatile senior won the long jump and took second in the triple jump as the Gaels finished just three points behind champion Archbishop Curley at the MIAA title meet.
•He was second in the Howard County, regional and Class 3A state crosscountry races to Bazell, helping the Raiders win them all. He made an even bigger impact indoors by setting class and state records in winning the 3,200-meter run at the state meet in 9minutes, 25.53seconds.
•In just his second year of competition, Morales continued to improve in the shot put this winter. The senior finished third in the tough Class 4A state meet (53 feet, 2.5 inches) and should be a force again this spring.
Craig Morgan•River Hill
•Morgan has come into his own in the past year, becoming one of the state's top distance runners. The senior won the Class 2A cross country state title and a state crown in the 1,600 meters indoors, posting a state record (4:21.96) in that class.
Zach Sullivan•Archbishop Spalding
•He has been the top distance runner among the private schools the past two years. The senior won the MIAA crosscountry title last year and this year, and he swept the 1,600 and 3,200meters at the indoor championships.
Lance Wilkes•Western Tech
•Wilkes helped the Wolverines win the Class 1A state title last spring and played a bigger role in Western Tech taking the championship again indoors. He's a versatile runner, scoring big points in sprints and relays and stepping into a leadership role this year.
•The senior has quietly become a solid runner for the Mustangs this year. He won the 55- and 300-meter dashes in the Class 3A state meet indoors as Meade stayed competitive despite losing a number of key athletes from last year.
