Gross displayed amazing versatility for a track and field athlete and was a big reason McDonogh beat out Gilman for the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association team title.
The senior won the 55-meter hurdles, the long jump and the triple jump. He also took second in the shot put that night, finishing off an unusual combination of events that helped McDonogh finish with 259 points to defeat the regular-season champion Greyhounds (218.33).
Gross had a big individual night but was happier that the Eagles were able to outlast their archrival for the team title.
"I felt like, all week, we were really zeroed in on our goal, which was to beat Gilman," Gross said that night.
Gross' athleticism enabled coach Jeff Sanborn to score points in a lot of different ways, ensuring big success for the Eagles.
