Sparrows Point senior Ethan Smith has committed to wrestle for Ohio State after his release from Iowa State

Sparrows Point’s Ethan Smith, who was officially released from his National Letter of Intent to wrestle for Iowa State on Thursday night, committed Friday night to 2015 NCAA champion Ohio State University.

The 182-pound senior is ranked No. 1 in the state by the Maryland State Wrestling Association and is ranked No. 8 in the country by Flowrestling. Smith asked for his release from Iowa State after coach Kevin Jackson announced he was resigning at the end of the season.

“After Kevin Jackson announced he was leaving that really changed my mind about things,” he said. “... I think I jumped the gun when I committed there. It was the first and only school I visited, so I didn’t really take into consideration how far away it is from my family and everything.”

Smith, who went 33-0 and won a 3A/4A state title at Aberdeen High School as a junior and on Friday improved to 39-0 to advance to the 1A/2A state semifinals, said he chose the Buckeyes for a number of reasons but it ultimately because he feels it’s a great fit.

“They’re a top-five team in the country, and one of the main reasons is one of my former teammates, Luke Pletcher from Greater Latrobe High School [in Pennsylvania], he wrestles there as their 141-pounder,” Smith said. “Having that connection, it all worked out.

“I just don’t think I’m going to have better partners anywhere else. Ohio State is going to be the best place for me.”
