WRESTLER OF THE YEAR
Andrew Mulry, South River
The senior 119-pounder closed out a fine four-year career with a Class 4A-3A state crown in a performance that characterized his season. Mulry earned a 5-4 decision over Northern of Calvert's Collin Leadbeter in the semifinal round and then beat River Hill's David Heckmann, 8-5, in the final to finish with a 37-1 mark.
After taking second at the Lackey Tournament early, Mulry closed out his season with 31 straight wins, dominating the county and regional tournaments before the impressive closing statement at states. He had 17 pins this season and finished his career with a 123-17 mark.
COACH OF THE YEAR
Jim Grim, Old Mill
Despite a disappointing ninth-place showing at the Class 4A-3A state tournament, it didn't take long for Grim to look back and appreciate a season that included a third straight county championship and another East regional crown.
The fourth-year coach got everything he could from a hard-working group that shared a refuse-to-lose attitude. The No. 3 Patriots, which started the season at No. 15, finished with a 17-2 mark.
Grim was quick to credit a dedicated senior class led by tri-captain and state runner-up Chris Volker.
