Mount de Sales
In his 19th season coaching the Sailors, Waskiewicz led them to their third conference championship (and second Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference title).
Mount de Sales won the Catholic League championship in 1998 and IAAM A Conference title in 2004, when Waskiewicz was honored as All-Baltimore City/County Coach of the Year.
This season, the No. 2 Sailors finished 17-4 overall and 16-1 in the IAAM A Conference. Three of their losses came to teams that finished the season ranked in the Top 10 -- No. 10 Seton Keough, No. 7 Northeast and No. 8 Perry Hall -- while their other defeat was to Northern-Calvert, the undefeated Class 3A state champion ranked No. 1 in the nation by MaxPreps.
“This season was the most rewarding of any I've had,” Waskiewicz said. “I've never been seeded No. 1 in the tourney -- tied with [Seton] Keough and won the coin toss. I knew we had pitching and defense, but didn't know if we would hit. We started hitting right out of the gate and never stopped. The team also played like a team together.”
In the IAAM championship game, Mount de Sales rallied for seven runs in the fifth inning en route to a 7-6 victory over Seton Keough.Copyright © 2015, The Baltimore Sun
