Four days after winning the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference championship, St. Frances is no longer in the Baltimore Catholic League playoffs.

Mount Carmel upset the No. 1 Panthers, 59-50, in the BCL quarterfinals on Thursday night.

Junior guards Johnny Rhodes and Brian Cunningham led the visiting Cougars offensively, while coach Tom Rose attributed the victory to great team defense.

"We just had an outstanding team effort tonight," Rose said. "I mean, we had eight guys who scored tonight for us. We really spread the ball out well."

Rhodes and Cunningham each scored 15 points, while senior guard Cory Groom added 11 for Mount Carmel.

"It was a battle back and forth," Rose said. "I thought we did a good job of neutralizing them on the glass."

Junior forward Dwayne Morgan scored 13 points to lead St. Frances, while senior forward Maurice White and senior guard Tevon Saddler had 10 points each.

The trio combined for 69 points in the Panthers' 75-62 win over No. 3 Mount St. Joseph in the MIAA A Conference title game on Sunday.

The Cougars (12-17), the lowest seed in the eight-team tournament, finished the regular season with a 1-13 record in the BCL, while top-seeded St. Frances (31-5) was 13-1 in the league before Thursday's loss.

Mount Carmel advances to Sunday's semifinal round at Loyola University. The Cougars will play at 6:30 p.m. against the winner of tonight's game between No. 7 Archbishop Spalding and Maria Goretti.
