Girls Athlete of the Week (Nov. 6, 2013): Bryana Nguyen, Atholton, golf

The senior closed out her four-year high school career in record-setting fashion as she comfortably captured her second straight individual state championship at the University of Maryland Golf Course last week. Nguyen's two-day total of 134 (8-under par) bettered the previous girls state tournament record by six shots and gave her a seven-shot victory over second-place finisher Delaney Shah of Wootton. The previous record was set by Eleanor Roosevelt's Caroline Sweet in 2007 when she finished with a two-day total of 140. On the tournament's first day on Oct. 28, Nguyen birdied three of her first four holes on her way to a single-day record 5-under par 66. She closed the tournament with a 12-foot birdie last Wednesday to finish the final round with a 68. Nguyen was the state runner-up in her freshman and sophomore seasons before claiming the past two titles.
