"This is a dream come true," South River senior forward Abbey Lawrence said. "I think we had the potential. Everyone worked hard and I believed in us. We've been getting better and better. I'm going to celebrate this for the rest of my life."
It was a game of dreams on both sides of the ball. For South River, making its first appearance in the title game since 2006, and for Catonsville (13-4), which over the team's history had been to just one final in 1988.
"Prior to the start of this game in the locker room, I told my team when the game was over there would be only one champion raising the trophy," Catonsville coach Lindsay Gullborg (Springer) said. "But I also told them that in my mind they were already winners."
Lawrence scored South River's first goal with 25:31 still to play in the first half and the Seahawks were on their way as Kayla White (two goals), Jennie Milligan, Alex Watson and Taylor Bresnahan all contributed on the scoreboard.
"Our game plan was to come out quick," South River coach Katie Corcoran said. "And we did. Winning this means everything. Our seniors have dreamed of this for four years and we've been kicked out of the playoffs by [20-time state champion] Severna Park each of the past three years.
"We strive every year to get to this point, but our region is so strong we knew we had to work hard. In this game against Catonsville, we had a great opponent to play, but our county and region really prepared us for this."
