The basketball wasn’t going through the hoop much for the Century boys basketball team in the first three quarters against South Carroll on Friday.
But the Knights -- who have played stingy defense all season -- did so again, enabling them to stay close to the Cavaliers.
By the time their offense found its way in the fourth quarter, Century was on its way to an improbable, 44-30 win over South Carroll.
After scoring just 13 points in the first three quarters, the Knights went on a 12-0 run early in the final period and then pulled away at the free-throw line.
Junior guard Kevin Steadman led the way with a game-high 17 points – 13 in the pivotal fourth – and fellow junior guard Brooks Decker added 11 points as the Knights improved to 13-3 overall and 8-1 in Carroll County.
Just how tough a time were the Knights having on offense? They scored two points in the first quarter and zero in the third. But South Carroll (11-5, 7-2) could only muster a 22-13 lead going into the fourth.
Trailing 24-15, the Knights got a 3-pointer from Decker to start the 12-0 run and another 3 later from senior guard Andy Morris that gave the Knights their first lead, 27-24, with 4:08 to play.
“I’m proud of our guys. We went through adversity all game long, didn’t shoot the ball well all night long, but we really hung together, didn’t get down on one another and started making shots in the fourth quarter. I thought our defense was consistent all night long – without the defense we wouldn’t be around in the second half,” Century coach George Wunder said.
It’s the ninth straight win for the Knights, including a 60-42 home win over South Carroll on Jan. 6 in the teams’ first meeting.
At halftime, South Carroll introduced the inaugural class in its new athletic hall of fame with the school’s first athletic director Fred Baker joining former standouts Amber Clutter, Joey Goodwin and Bryan Hamper as the charter members.
